Privacy policy

Next Commute shows live Sydney public transport departures. It has no accounts, no ads and no cookies, and the app contains no third-party SDKs. This page says what the app and this website do with information about you.

Your location

If you allow it, the app uses your location to find the stops near you. Before it leaves your phone, the app rounds it to about 100 metres. Our server uses it to look up nearby stops and does not store it against you.

  • Our request logs record the address of each request, but the location in it is removed before the log is stored.
  • The rounded location is used as a key in a short-lived cache, so that requests from the same area are answered once: for 20 seconds for nearby departures, and for up to 6 hours for the trip planner's list of nearby stops. Nothing in the cache identifies you or your device.
  • To list stops near a point in the trip planner, our server asks Transport for NSW's trip planner, sending only the rounded point.

You can turn location off at any time in Settings. The rest of the app keeps working.

An anonymous ID for this install

The app creates a random ID the first time it runs and sends it with each request. We use it only to count how many devices use the app. It is not linked to your name, your Apple account or any identifier of your phone, and deleting the app deletes it.

What our servers log

Like most web services, ours log each request to the app's API and to this website. Each entry holds the time, the address requested (which stop, route or trip was looked up, and the stops a journey was planned between, with any location removed), the result, the install ID above, your IP address, the approximate location of that IP address as estimated by Cloudflare (country, city and coordinates), and your browser or app version.

We keep these logs for 180 days and use them to run, secure and improve the service, for example to block abusive traffic and to see which features are used. We do not sell them, share them for advertising, or combine them with information from elsewhere.

Saved stops

Stops you save stay on your phone and, if iCloud is on, in your own iCloud account so they appear on your other devices. We never receive them.

Services we rely on

  • Transport for NSW provides the timetables, live departures and journey plans. Our server fetches them; your device does not contact Transport for NSW.
  • Apple provides the maps and the place search in the trip planner, under Apple's privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare carries traffic to our servers, protects them and counts visits to this website, under Cloudflare's privacy policy.

The app contains no third-party SDKs.

This website

This website sets no cookies. It counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which records pages viewed and how fast they loaded without cookies or fingerprinting, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. Visits also appear in the server logs described above.

Children

The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect anything about them.

Your choices and contact

You can use the app without location, and deleting it removes the install ID and your saved stops from the phone. To ask about your information or this policy, email [email protected]. If this policy changes, the date above changes with it.
